Mobile POC System for infectious diseases in horses
The innovation of the OPTOCHIP project is the direct integration of optical elements into a microfluidic disposable, which is processed by a control and reading device and by which pathogenic organisms from biological materials can be detected selectively via their specific nucleic acids.

While the scientists of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) are developing miniaturized optical measurement technology for the detection of the amplified pathogen-specific genome sections, the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT) is responsible for a unit to extract the nucleic acid from the sample material. Krämer Engineering GmbH designs and produces the assay cartridge with chambers for the fully automated extraction and amplification of the target nucleic acid preparation and amplification of the nucleic acids and which also integrates the components developed by CAU and ISIT. The cartridge is to be used in a control and readout device to be developed by Byonoy GmbH. The biochemical assays for the specific detection of the infectious agents are being developed by altona Diagnostics GmbH, which will also be responsible for the marketing of the OPTOCHIP system.

OPTOCHIP is a so-called Point-of-Care-system for veterinary medicine with special focus on the use on horses. The technology is based on organic light-emitting diodes and organic photodiodes and can optically detect the sought-after fluorescence- labelled, pathogen-specific genome section (Prof. Dr. Martina Gerken/CAU Kiel).
The project will receive a total of 1,1 million Euro in funding over the next three years. The Hamburg partners receive their funding support from the Hamburgische Investitions- und Förderbank (IFB) while the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) supports the Schleswig Holstein partners.
